Characterization of biochemical compounds and antioxidant activity of “dedo-de-moça” chili pepper accessions Horticultura Brasileira
Gomes,Gisely Paula; Constantino,Leonel Vinicius; Corte,Ligia Erpen-Dalla; Riger,Cristiano Jorge; Chaves,Douglas S de A; Gonçalves,Leandro SA.
ABSTRACT Capsicum baccatum is one of the main chili pepper species grown and consumed in South America. In Brazil, C. baccatum var. pendulum is widely cultivated, especially “dedo-de-moça” type. For most horticultural crops, including Capsicum species their diversity remains under-explored for traits related to fruit quality, since over the past half century breeding efforts have focused mainly on good agronomic performances. The investment in screening traits such as flavor, nutritional compounds and antioxidant content in traditional varieties is very important to support fruit quality breeding efforts. Thus, the objective of this study was accessing the variations into content of soluble solid, acidity, capsaicinoid, vitamin C, total phenolic compounds...

Combining ability and heterosis for agronomic traits in chili pepper Horticultura Brasileira
Rodrigues,Rosana; Gonçalves,Leandro SA; Bento,Cintia dos S; Sudré,Claudia P; Robaina,Renata R; Amaral Júnior,Antonio T do.
The Capsicum breeding has been developed with emphasis in bell pepper (Capsicum annuum) and few studies are available in other species, especially C. baccatum, which has potential use not only as disease resistance source but also in obtaining new genotypes suitable for farmers' production. In the present work, the combining ability of ten C. baccatum hybrids, along with their five parentals, were tested considering 12 agronomic traits. The hybrids were produced from a complete diallel without reciprocals and assessed in greenhouse conditions, in Campos dos Goytacazes, Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil, during the period July to December 2009. The experimental design was a randomized block with three replications and the following agronomic traits evaluated:...

Determining the inheritance of agronomic traits in chili pepper Horticultura Brasileira
Bento,Cíntia S; Rodrigues,Rosana; Sudré,Cláudia P; Medeiros,Artur M; Mathias,Vinícius AS; Gonçalves,Leandro SA.
ABSTRACT The Capsicum genus is widely studied in many countries but most of research focuses on C. annuum. Although its importance as potential genetic resource for breeding to disease resistance and fruit quality, studies on genetics and breeding in C. baccatum var. pendulum are still scarce and it still remains as an underexploited crop. This paper aimed to study the inheritance of agronomic characteristics, to estimate the genetic parameters for seven agronomic traits in C. baccatum var. pendulum, using generation mean analysis and to verify the existence of major genes and polygenes with additive and non-additive effects, using the method of maximum likelihood with the aid of Monogen software. The agronomic traits evaluated were: number of fruits per...

Non-parametric indexes in selecting hybrids of chili pepper Horticultura Brasileira
Medeiros,Artur M; Rodrigues,Rosana; Costa,Daniele V; Pimenta,Samy; Oliveira,Jurandi G.
ABSTRACT On Solanaceae, the use of hybrids in seed market has been consolidated in recent decades, especially for sweet pepper and tomato crops. However, other crops such as chili peppers (Capsicum spp.) are still neglected by breeding programs which aim to obtain hybrids. The objectives of this work were to evaluate experimental chili pepper hybrids dedo-de-moça (C. baccatum var. pendulum) in relation to production and quality of fruits in two growing seasons and to compare non-parametric selection indexes based on these aspects. Eight chili pepper genotypes were evaluated, being three experimental hybrids (HP03, HP04 and HP08), three lineages (PIM01, PIM02 and PIM03) and two commercial cultivars as controls (‘BRS Mari’ and ‘Ibirajá’), under field...

Soethe,Cristina; Steffens,Cristiano André; Mattos,Leonora Mansur; Ferreira,Nathalie Alcântara; Mayer,Daiane Michele.
ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the physicochemical characteristics and functional properties of "dedo-de-moça" 'BRS Mari' pepper fruits at different maturity stages, and determine the ideal harvest stage for fresh consumption. The pepper plants were grown in the experimental field of Embrapa Hortaliças (Brasília, DF, Brazil) in 2012, and their fruits were evaluated at 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, and 80 days after anthesis (DAA) to determine the soluble solid content (SS), titratable acidity (TA), SS/TA ratio, color (hue angle and lightness), a, b, and total chlorophyll, total phenolic compounds (TPC), total antioxidant activity (TAA), and capsanthin. It was observed that SS content increased until 70 DAA, and TA increased until 50 DAA,...

Reaction of Capsicum peppers commercialized in the Federal District to bacterial wilt Horticultura Brasileira
Rossato,Maurício; Santiago,Thais R.; Lopes,Carlos Alberto.
ABSTRACT In Brazil, the bacterial pathogens Ralstonia solanacearum and R. pseudosolanacearum cause substantial losses by inducing bacterial wilt on several solanaceous crops; R. pseudosolanacearum is the main species associated with peppers (Capsicum sp.). To verify the bacterial wilt reaction on Capsicum peppers commercialized in the Federal District (DF), fruits of several genotypes within this genus were collected from six different fairs distributed in the satellite cities of Gama, Sobradinho and Guará. Seedlings with four true leaves derived from seeds extracted from such fruits were root inoculated with 108 CFU/mL with a representative isolate of R. pseudosolanacearum (race 1, biovar 3, phylotype I, sequevar 18). The evaluated species were: Capsicum...

Seed physiological potential of “dedo-de-moça” pepper in relation to maturation stages and rest periods of the fruits Horticultura Brasileira
Gonçalves,Leandro SA; Gomes,Gisely Paula; Damasceno Junior,Clério Valentin; Queiroz,Robison Alessandro de; Takahashi,Lucia SA; Costa,Denis S da; Nunes,Maria PBA.
ABSTRACT One of the main problems in pepper seed production is the uneven maturation of the fruits due to the continuous flowering period of the plant, making it difficult to harvest all the fruits at the same time. Thus, studies on fruit maturation stage and seed physiological potential are extremely important in order to identify the appropriate harvest time, avoiding seed deterioration. The aim of this study was to evaluate the physiological potential of five genotypes of “dedo de moça” pepper seeds (Capsicum baccatum var. pendulum) in three maturation stages (green, orange and red), with and without 10-day rest period after harvest date. Physiological potential and vigor of seeds were evaluated through germination tests (first count, accelerated aging...
